Fitting cows to your operation

چکیده
Introduction Increasing cow efficiency requires optimizing the ratio of output to input. Evaluating the market endpoint, resources, and management preferences is the first step in determining the attributes that are needed in the cow herd. The next step is identifying the biological attributes of the cow that fits your production system. Around the world the ecologies of grazing systems vary greatly. Indigenous cattle evolved within these different ecologies that were well suited to specific grazing environments. This great genetic diversity provides a great opportunity to match cows with specific attributes to a given production system. Decisions used to optimize the output:input ratio on biological bases is not necessarily the same decisions that would be used to optimize the ratio on economic bases. Some types of cattle have been used across a wider range of grazing systems than would be biologically optimum because there are economic advantages that warrant increasing the inputs that allow them to be used in those production systems.

Posters SURVIVAL ANALYSIS FOR LENGTH OF PRODUCTIVE LIFE OF BEEF COWS
Survival analysis is applied to records for length of productive life of Angus cows, fitting several proportional hazards models. It is shown that a piece-wise Weibull model with a time-dependent stage effect can model the distinct annual culling pattern reasonably well. Analyses fitting a sire model suggest some genetic variability, with heritability estimates on the logarithmic scale ranging ...

The artificial neural networks, the learning algorithms and mathematical models mimicking the information processing ability of human brain can be used non-linear and complex data. The aim of this study was to predict the breeding values for milk production trait in Iranian Holstein cows applying artificial neural networks. Data on 35167 Iranian Holstein cows recorded between 1998 to 2009 were ...
متن کاملGenetic parameters for an alternative criterion to improve productive longevity of Nellore cows.
Number of calvings at 53 mo (NC53) was proposed as an alternative selection criterion to improve productive longevity of Nellore cows. This study was carried out to estimate variance components for NC53 by assuming different models, so that the potential for using this selection criterion to improve fertility of Nellore cows could be assessed. Genetic correlations between NC53, number of calvin...
متن کاملASC-134: Should You Be Feeding Fat to Your Cows
Feeding fats to dairy cows has become increasingly popular primarily for two reasons: 1. Supplemental fat can be used to increase the energy concentration of diets for highproducing cows. During early lactation, highproducing cows cannot consume enough feed to meet their energy needs. Fats are fed to cows: • to prevent them from losing too much weight, • to shorten the time frame during which t...
